Happened during
the Naval race but
the Germans
thought Britain
would not care
about their actions
in Agadir.
However they were still annoyed
and thought Germany were planning
to build an Atlantic Naval Base and
challenge Britain's base in Gibraltar
Germany's action
led Britain to
supporting France.
Example of German Imperialism
What? Rebellion
in Northern
Morocco, France
sent army to fight,
Germany angered.
In July 1911, Germany sent
a Panther Gunboat to
'rescue' Germans in Agadir.
Britain were worried that if
Germany took Agadir, they might
want Gibralter (30 miles away)
Another example of
Over-reaction and it was
seen as a warlike action
by other countries.
Result? Preparations for
war were made in
Germany, Britain and
France but in the end
Germany backed down
and accepted 2 marshy
lands strips of land in the
French Congo in return
for accepting French
control in Morocco.
Consequences:
Far more dangerous than
the previous crises and
brought Europe closer to
war.
Germany felt humiliated,
if there was a future
crisis, Germany was not
likely to back down.
German people were more annoyed
with Britain and France and German
public opinion was beginning to
accept the idea of a war.
Britain became more
convinced that Germany
wanted to dominate
Europe.
Britain made a secret
agreement with France. Britain
promised to defend the north
coast of France if it was
attacked from the sea. And
France promised to defend the
Mediterranean.
Italy opposed Germany over
Agadir, this weakened the
Triple Alliance and meant
Germany relied more on
Austria-Hungary.
