QUESTION1 A 1 & 2B

  1. Explore the different ways in which people are represented in your three main texts

    • CDWM
      • Normal people appeal on the show, thus creating appeal for relatable content. Features all stretches of people (such as a father living on an estate with children to an australian lady who is rich).
        • Steve subverts stereotypes of men and particularly men with his stereotypical traditional male attitude as it turns out he is a talented chef. Thus subverting traditional stereotypes that men cant cook. He also looks entirely after his children and is a single father, thus once again subverting traditional male stereotypes
          • Australian lady: Argumentative thus subverting traditional female stereotypes. Rich VS Poor, Male VS Female (Levi Strauss' Binary Oppositions)
    • CSI
      • Men & women are represented as equal as both are detectives and treated with equal respect
      • Traditional masculinity seems to be subverted whilst the husband is pushed around by his parents. Whilst traditional femininity is subverted with the mother's argumentative attitude.
      • Both the murderers and detectives are female, thus subverting traditional female roles in society and also subverting stereotypes that men tend to be murderers
    • CTM
      • The women fighting at the beginning subverts traditional female stereotypes, particularly those in 1950s
      • Women portrayed as influential and powerful in a community subverts traditional stereotypes from this era
        • Other women are overpowered by husbands, supporting stereotypes of this era
  2. Discuss the audience appeal of your three main texts

    • TBEMH
      • Relatable characters throughout, the main characters are elderly and are facing problems that many elderly people will face, thus drawing in an audience from that generation as they can relate to the characters
      • Appeals for social interaction & integration. Due to it being aimed at older people (a generation largely ignored by modern day cinema), it would draw in crowds of older people who would then use the film as a conversation topic
        • Uses location as escapism and entertainment. Some audience's will be drawn to the text due to the exotic location and thus would let them escape from modern day (uses and gratification theory)
    • SKYFALL
      • Entertains audience with its engrossing and interesting narrative (complex narrative draws audience in to make them feel as if they are a part of the story). Certain aspects of the narrative such as the original bond vehicles would appeal to fans of the bond films that already have knowledge of the films
        • As its a significant film (20 years of Bond and largest budget for a film at that time), it would create talk, thus making it a watercooler film as it would appeal to the audience as they could join in on conversations with others about the film
          • Due to its long lasting franchise and many films. Those who have seen every other film would want to see it regardless of reviews, thus creating appeal from the audience as they have respect for the long lasting franchise and expect a good film
    • WINTER'S BONE
      • Gritty storyline and escapism allows fans to be drawn to the film and learn about an area of america they may not know about (Appeals to the explorer in particular)
        • It was largely publicised by its success at the sundance film festival. This drew in large audiences from around the world as its a well known film festival for independent films. Thus drawing and appealing to cinephiles
          • The younger protagonist may appeal to 16-25 year olds. A rarely documented view of america. Educates through uses and gratification theory
  3. Explore the impact of regulation on your three main texts

    • ALDI
      • Challenged by other supermarkets for false advertising due to false climbs of certain prices for certain supermarkets. Nothing really happened apart from price corrections
    • CHANEL
      • In 2013 the advert came under ASA ruling due to a scene of undressing when the advert appeared during a showing of ice age 2. Created anger over sexual content and led to the advert not being shown at this time
    • SPECSAVERS
      • Classed as offensive to people with poor eyesight however nothing was done. Also had to remove offensive advert from social media regarding a ball boy being tackled at a football event due to insensitivity
