chapter 2
why people work?
people work for a variety of reasons, the main reason people work is so that they can earn money to buy food and the basic necessities of life.
but some work is voluntary and does not require any money.
in this chapter we will discuss the wide range of motivations for work and how firms can make use and how firms can make use of this motivation to encourage their workers to work more effectively and from this come increased profits.
it also considers a wide range of motivations for work and how firms can make use of this motivation to encourage their workers to work more effectively and from this comes increased profits, it also considers leadership styles which might be used by managers, the effect of trade unions on the workers and legal considerations when employing workers.
what are the reasons for working:
money: to pay the necessities and some luxuries.
security: a sense of security i.e. knowing that your job and pay are safe-you are not likely to lose your job.
social needs affiliation: feeling part of a group or organisation, meeting people, making friends at work.
esteem-needs
self-importance
feeling important feeling the job you do is important.
job satisfaction:
enjoyment is derived from feeling that you have done a good job.
of course, improved organisation in a business and/or the increasing use of new technology, especially when it replaces workers, results in productivity gains.however businesses also need to recognise that the value of their employees output, in terms of how much they produce and the quality of it,comes from how well motivated they are to work effectively.employees are a firms greatest asset.
well motivated workers high productivity ( employees work more effectively)increased output= higher productivity
unhappy workers= do not work very effectively=low output=lower/no profit.

motivating theories
people who work for themselves tend to work hard and more effectively as they see their direct benefit of their labours, however when people such as employees work for someone else then they may not work as effectively.
