Soil Classification - language of communication among engineers, it helps to categorize the soils according to its probable engineering behaviour.
The most common Classification Systems:
1. Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) - he best-known and most widely used engineering soil classification system in the world
2. AASHTO - developed primarily for evaluating sub-grade soils under highway pavements
USCS (1952 Professor Casagrande the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers)
The basic concept of the USCS is that coarse-grained soils can be classified according to their grain sizes and grain size distributions, whereas the engineering behavior of fine-grained soils is related primarily to their plasticity. In the USCS only the results of a sieve analysis and the Atterberg limits are necessary to completely classify a soil.
