Nitrogen Fixation:
It is the process of conversion of atmospheric N2 to soluble form by roots of plants.
Steps:
1. Ammonification:
Plants make their protein using soluble form of N2.
From plant it passes to animals.
The excreta of animals and after their death the remains are converted to ammonia by ammonifying bacteria.
2. Nitrification -->
Ammonia is converted to nitrites and nitrates by nitrosomonas and nitrobacter respectively which is absorbed by roots of plants.
3. Denitrification -->
some soil N2 is converted to atmospheric N2 by denitrifying bacteria
eg. pseudomonas
this maintains nitrogen conc in atmophere.
