Piagets 4 stages
Stage 1- Sensori-motor stage
The
child is only able to experience the world through their senses. They also use
body movements. This starts with reflexes that they are born with. One major
development during this stage is object
permanence.
Stage 2- Pre-Operational stage
During
this stage the child starts to use symbols, signs, or objects to represent
things. This is an example of symbolic
thinking. When something ‘stands for’ something else. For example, a banana
as a phone. Also during this stage they show ego centrism, de centration and animism.
Stage 3- concrete operational
Main
new cognitive skill is conservation,
this is the knowledge that properties of objects are the same (are conserved)
even if the objects appear to change.
Stage 4- Formal Operational
By
adolescence, children develop hypothetical
thinking; they can solve and think about sophisticated abstract problems.
