Atoms can have different numbers of protons. neutrons and electrons its the number of protons that decide what type of element it is

An atom with one proton the nucleus is hydrogen and an atom with two protons is called helium.

If a substance only contains atoms with the same number of protons is called an element There are about 100 different elements

so all the atoms of a particular element have the same number of protons and different elements have atoms with different numbers of protons

Isotopes
