cognitive interview
a police technique for interviewing witnesses to a qcrime, which encourages them to recreate the original context in order to increase the accessibility of the stored information.
the four key components
Report everything-the eye witness is asked to recall everything about the event even details that seem irrelevant
Mental reinstatement of original context-the eye witness put themselves back in the situation and recall aspects of the science in their heads (including smells sounds and emotions) encoding specificity when the information is encoded the context of the information is also encoded which means memory recall can be improved by recreating the context.
changing the order-the eye witness is asked to recall the events in different orders eg they may be asked about the end first.
changing the perspective the eye witness is asked to put themselves in a different location at the scene from another persons perspective.
how changing the order and perspective works-varied retrieval- access to memory is enchanced by usingna variety of retrieval paths and cues.

Evaluation of the cognitive interview
Konken et a (1999)
Aim-to find out if the cognitive interview is better than the normal interview
Procedure-conducted a meta analysis of 53 studies their compared the ci and standard interview
Findings- an average increase of 34 percent accuracy with ci compared to standard techniques.
Conclusion- the ci is more effective
Evaluation- this experiment used volunteers which were mainly colllege students. this is not representitive because the college students are only a certain age therefore lacks external validity.

Milne and bull (2002)
Aim-to find out if the cognitive interview os better than the normal interview
Procedure-interviewed undergrads snd children using each single component compared to control
Findings-recall across four compnents similar to a control when used combination of reproted everything and mental reinststement recall was higher
conculision- when used separarlty thencompomemts of the ci are no more effective than otherncomponemts of the ci are no more effective than other techniques when used in combination can produce better results
evaluation-this is a lab experiment which has high control which could lack ecological validity. this is not representative becuase its not done in real life.
