Capital Punishment

Two Traditions:

Catholic - Some are for capital Punishment

Protestant - Some are against

For:

"If you live by the sword, you die by the sword" - If you live a violent life, you should expect a violent death

"An eye for an eye" - If it's a fair punishment for murder, its retribution.

"They will hear of it and be afraid" - It's a deterrent

It's the ultimate protection - they can not possibly kill again

It's a cheaper option - money could be used to help others, "Love your neighbour"

Against: If the person is proved innocent, it is too late

Gives no chance reform - "Jesus saved the adulterous woman from stoning and gave her a second chance"

If Jesus could forgive those who crucified him, surely we should show forgiveness to others

"Do not Kill" - if we use capital punishment, we are going against the 10 commandments

Human Rights Treaty states that "Everyone has the right to life." - It goes against this moral right.

Sanctity of Life - All life is sacred - Holy - God gives life, only God can take it away. Human beings playing God is blasphemy

Sanctity of Life - All Life is sacred/ God gave life, only God can take it away
