IP- Internet Protocol: IP addresses are unique identifiers for computers(Devices) 4 byte numbers
TCP- Transmission Control Protocol: Used with IP for communication, Deals with transmission of data packets(addressing and error handling)
TCPIP - basis of internet communication
HTTP- Hyper text transfer protocol: Used for multimedia data, uses port 80 for transfer of web traffic.
FTP- File transfer protocol: used for copying files between locations over the internet. Dropped connections resume between connections.
Protocol stacks
is implementation of pc protocol suite (collection of protocols)
EG TCP/IP stack Application layer(HTTP) --> Transport layer(TPC) network layer(IP) --> data link layer
Packet switching
data broken into packets
each contains the source and destination addresses(Tracking information)
error handling (Checksum, re-assembly data)
Packets use different routes to reach destination
Data reassembled on delivery
Routing
Hardware Devices with software running on them.
Connect networks together.
Will choose best path for packets
wifi router connects devices to ISP(Internet service provider)
Use headers and forwarding tables(IP addresses of other routers) to determine the best path for forwarding the data(packets)
Use protocols to communicate with each other and configure the best route between hosts
