Atoms make up matter.
The properties of the atom give matter properties.
Atoms are the smallest unit of matter that retain the properties of the element.
Subatomic particles don´t retain an elements properties.
Elements are substances that cannot be broken down into other substances. They are determined by the number of protons. There are 118 elements, thought to be all there is in the universe. Only 90/91 occur naturally. 27 are synthetic.
