Face Reconstruction Systems
provide a visual representation of a suspect's face.
include Identikit, Photofit + computer systems such as Identikit2000, E-Fit and Evo-Fit.
although there are many forms of reconstrution systems available, theya re usually poor at producing realistic likenesses.
Ellis, Shepard + Davies (1975) - subjects saw two Photofit faces and were told to reconstruct these faces again usin Photofit -> participants found this to be a difficult task.
- Subjetcs were shown 6 faces and were told to reconstruct these faces from memory immediatly afterwards using Photofit. A second group then tried to use the Photofits produced to identify the 6 original faces -> success rate = 12.5% (very poor, although better than chance).
Ellis, Shepard + Davies (1978) - participants asked to watch a video of a man reading, some were asked to attend to his face (expecting to make a Photo-fit out of it) + some were asked to attend to the passage he was reading (expecting to receive a comprehension test) -> even when participants were attending to the face, Photofits were poor likenesses.
- compared Photofits to sketches and found that sketches were better if face was present whereas Photofits were better when the target was reconstructed from memory
