MUSCULAR SYSTEM
All movements require muscle which are organs using chemical energy to contract. (ATP)
A. Muscular tissue enables the body and its parts to move.
Movement caused by ability of muscle cells (called fibers) to shorten or contract(skeletal muscle contraction)
Muscle cells shorten by converting chemical energy (obtain from food)into mechanical energy, which cause movement
THREE TYPE OF MUSCLE IN THE BODY
Skeletal Muscle- also called striated or voluntary muscle.(microscope reveals crosswise striations)
is 40-50% of body weight("red meat" attached to bones)
Cardiac Muscle- comprises the bulk of the heart
cardiac muscle branch frequently
characterized by unique dark bands called intercalated disks,
That enables the cardiac muscle to contract very efficiently, thereby pumping the blood.(this is the whole purpose of the muscle.) The interconnected nature and the branching of the muscle cells of the cardiac muscle allows the heart to contract very efficiently as a unit.
Smooth muscle-
also called non-striated, involuntary, or visceral muscle.
Smooth muscles are found in walls of hollow visceral structures such as digestive structures such as digestive track, blood vessles, and ureters.
