Explain the difference between the ways in which parallel and serial communications are carried out. (2)

Serial transmission is carried out along a single channel sending one bit after the other, whereas parallel transmission is carried out along multiple channels, many upon many.

Apart from widespread availability of USB ports, explain why peripherals usually use a serial communication method such as USB instead of parallel communication (1)

Under long distances cross talk can occur where a signal leeches/interferes with another wire and corrupts the overall data being sent.

Explain the difference between asynchronous and synchronous communication (1)

Synchronous transmission is *perfectly synchronised through the use of a common clock whereas asynchronous transmission is * synchronised through the transition of bits between packets. *(regularly)
