conpounds contain two or more elements joined up

the particals in a compound are called molecules - formes when atoms join

to make a compound, the atoms must be from different elements and the join is known as a chemical bond.

in chemical reactions elements combine together

the new compounds produced by any chemical reaction are allways totally different from the original elements the classic example of ths is iron reacting with sulphur: iron is magnetic. it reacts with sulphur to make iron sulphide, a totally new substance which is not magnetic

when elements undergo a chemical reaction like the one above, the products will always have a chemical formular

compounds can be split up back into there original elements but it won't just happened by itself - you have to supply alot of energy to make the reaction go in reverse
