An algorithm is a term used to describe a set of instructions told to either a machine or even a computer. They are also one of the four cornerstones of computer science along side : Decomposition, Abstraction, Pattern recognition and then Algorithms .

Decomposition involves the breaking down of a problem or a system into smaller parts . These smaller parts are easier and quicker to understand fore example if you had an algorithm in 10 parts you could use decomposition to break it down into 5 parts.
