Archaea
3 groups of Archaea:
1. Thermoacidophiles (acidothermophiles):
-anerobic
-can survive in high temperatures and high acid
2. Halophiles
-aerobic
-live in areas with high salt
3. Methanogens
-anerobic
-use carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide or nitrogen gas and methane gas is produced as a bi-product
Why were Archaea bacteria originally classified with bacteria?
-same shapes
-tiny (microscopic)
-reproduce similar to Bacteria
-"surface structure" is similar to bacteria ---> flagella, cell wall, no organelles
-prokaryotes
-manufacture energy in similar ways
Why were Archaea bacteria given their own Kingdom after?
-cell wall is chemically different (no peptidoglycon)
-phospholipid structure of cell wall is different
-DNA/RNA is chemically different from Bacteria
