  1. Rutherford's Experiment

    • Previous theory was plum pudding theory, atom filled with positively charged matter with randomly dispersed negative electrons.
    • Rutherford expected: Expected nearly all to pass straight through
    • Rutherford observed: Most passed straight through, some deflected and some reflected.
    • Rutherford concluded: Since most pass through, most of atom is empty space. Since some reflected/deflected suggested the mass of the atom is concentrated in small positively charged nucleus.
    • Rutherford's Experiment
  2. Particles

    • Alpha particles are helium nuclei.
    • Beta particles are electrons
    • Every particles has a antiparticle, the antiparticle for an electron is the positiron
    • Neutrinos are mass-less and charge-less particles and have anti-neutrino antiparticles
    • Fundamental Particles
