TRAINING FOR MUSCLE
HYPERTROPHY
Hypertrophy
- ↑ in cross-sectional area (CSA) of existing
muscle fibres (i.e. muscle cells)
- contractile elements within the fibre enlarge,
and the extracellular matrix expands
Hypertrophy Involves:
– ↑ in synthesis of the contractile proteins Actin & Myosin w/in the myofibrils (↑ myofibril CSA)
– ↑ in the number of myofibrils within the muscle
fibre/cell (i.e. proliferation)
* New contractile proteins are added to the
external layers of the myofibril, resulting in
an increase in its diameter (Folland & Williams, 2007)
