Developing awareness of the exponential population growth In accessible and popular coastal areas.

Australia:

most urbanized country in the world- 90% of the population live in urban settlements - located along the coast.

main ports and industries > bring employment and promote urban growth

rainfall is greater along the coast- farming occurs within 300-400 km of the coastline.

People are leaving farming in inland rural areas and moving to coastal towns- recent droughts = made farming difficult, young people are leaving the land to work in service jobs on the coast e.g Tourism

Immigrants often move straight to one of the coastal settlements .

Coastal towns offer an outdoor lifestyle, urban attractions (culture & restaurants)

house prices are cheaper in smaller coastal towns > young families often move there

Figures:

Australian Bureau of statistics: people moving to coastal communities surged by 2% compared with a national growth rate of 1.2%

Migration along the coast continues to gather momentum- places demand on council services in sea change/coastalisation areas

79% of those that are migrating are under the age of 50
