Institutionalisation

Rutter et al (2007)

studied 100 orphans and assessed them at 4,6 and 11.

2 groups were adopted before 6 months and 1 after 6 months into British families and were compared with UK children adopted at the same time.

the Romanian orphans adopted before 6 months had 'normal' development in that they were similar to the UK sample that were adopted at the same time.

the Romanian orphans adopted after 6 months had disinhibited attachments.

the longer the period of privation the more serious of social development. However the long - term consequences of institutionalisation may be less severe than one thought if the child has the opportunity to form attachments.
