Evolution is a theory about the origin of life.
This is a myth. The Scientific Theory of Evolution does not suggest how life began; evolution states that living things change over time in response to changes in their environment.
Natural selection is the process through which evolution takes place.
This is a fact. The process of natural selection allows a population to change over time in response to changes in the environment.
Evolution is both observable and testable.
This is a fact. Scientists have observed the process of evolution by studying specific species over long periods of time. Scientists are able to test a theory by examining organisms in their natural environment. Since the changes in a species may take more than thousands of years to occur, scientists have gathered fossil evidence that allows us to observe changes over time.
Scientists have proven that Darwin’s ideas were incorrect.
This is a myth. Scientists have not rejected Darwin’s ideas. They have improved on Darwin’s ideas because, over time. They have gained more information. For example, now that scientists can analyze DNA they know that some changes in species are due to genetic mistakes called mutations, however, they still support the Darwin’s ideas and the process of natural selection.
Evolution can take place over thousands or even millions of years.
This is a fact. Some changes in populations are so slow that it takes millions of years for them to become recognizable.
Natural selection prepares individuals for changes in the environment.
This is a myth. Natural selection is a response to a change in the environment. Natural selection does not occur until after the environment has changed; therefore, it cannot predict future conditions.
Evolution does not imply that each generation of a species is better than the prior generation.
This is a fact. Evolution does not suggest that organisms are constantly improving; it does tell us that they are becoming better adapted to a changing environment.
Gaps in the fossil record prove that the Scientific Theory of Evolution is impossible.
This is a myth. Not all organisms fossilize well. We would expect that scientists would not find fossils of every organism that ever lived. This does not disprove all the evidence we have that supports the Scientific Theory of Evolution.
