Properties of Waves

Wave- A series of phases which transverse energy from one place to another.

Wave Pulse- A single energy- carrying disturbance in a medium or cycle of an electromagnetic wave ( EM Wave).

Crest- The highest points on the transverse waves. They are positions of maximum particle displacement.

Trough- The lowest points on transverse waves They are positions of maximum particle displacement.

Wavelength- The distance from a point on a wave pulse to the identical point on the next wave pulse.

Frequency ( Hz) - ( Sound Wave) Determines the PITCH (highest or lowness) of the sound produced.

Frequency ( Hz)- ( Wave Motion) The number of waves that pass a fixed position/second)

Period- Time it takes for one complete wave pulse to pass fix point.

T= 1/f

Amplitude- The distance from zero displacement position to the particles to the top of a crest or the bottom of a trough

Compression- A region higher than normal density of the medium carrying a longitudinal wave.

Rarefaction- A region lower than normal density of the medium carrying the longitudinal wave.

Displacement (s)- A measure of how far a

Waves
