Bohr Model of the Atom
Relative charge Relative mass Symbol Position in the atom
Proton +1 1 p In the nucleus
Electron -1 1/1840 \(e^-\) Energy levels surrounding nucleus
Neutron 0 1 n In the nucleus
J.J. Thomson discovered the electron.
Ernest Rutherford discovered proton.
James Chadwick discovered the nucleus.
Nucleus: Small core of the atom that contains protons and neutrons and hence, the bulk of the mass of the atom. First suggested by Rutherford.

Information about an Atom
Atomic number(Z): The number of protons in an element
In the case of a neutral atom, this is also the number of electrons.
Mass number: Number of protons and neutrons in an atom
Isotopes: Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons
