Questions in this quiz (10)

  1. 1The Sun looks about [blank_start]half its size[blank_end] half it does from
Earth when seen from Mars. When Mars is closest
to the Sun in its orbit the southern hemisphere
points toward the Sun and this causes a very short
but fiercely hot summer. In the north it experiences a
brief but cold winter. When the planet is farthest
from the Sun, Mars experiences a long and mild
summer because the northern hemisphere points
toward the Sun. This is compared with a cold and
    lengthy winter in the south.
    1. Ahalf its size
  2. 2Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun and last of the terrestrial planets and is around 227,940,000 km [blank_start]from the Sun[blank_end].
    1. Afrom the Sun
  3. 3The planet is named after [blank_start]Mars, the Roman god of war[blank_end]. It was known
to the ancient Greeks as Ares, their god of war. This is thought to be
because of the blood-red color of the planet which was also used by
other ancient cultures. Chinese astronomers call Mars the “fire star”
while ancient Egyptian priests called it “Her Desher” meaning “the red
    one”.
    1. AMars, the Roman god of war
  4. 4Mars experiences [blank_start]huge dust storms[blank_end] – the largest in our
solar system. This is due to the elliptical shape of the
planet’s orbit path around the Sun. The orbit path is more
elongated than many of the other planets and this oval
shaped orbit results in fierce [blank_start]dust storms[blank_end] that cover the
entire planet and can last for many months.
    1. Ahuge dust storms
    2. Bdust storms
  5. 5Mars is the only other planet besides Earth that has [blank_start]polar icecaps[blank_end]. The [blank_start]northern cap[blank_end] is called the Planum Boreum, with
Planum Australe in the south. [blank_start]Water ice[blank_end] has also been found
    under the [blank_start]Martian ice caps[blank_end].
    1. Apolar icecaps
    2. Bnorthern cap
    3. CMartian ice caps
    4. DWater ice
  6. 6[blank_start]Pieces of Mars[blank_end] have been found on Earth. It is believed that trace amounts of the
[blank_start]Martian atmosphere[blank_end] were within meteorites that the planet ejected. These meteorites
then orbited the solar system for millions of years amongst the other objects and solar
debris before eventually entering the Earth’s atmosphere and crashing to the ground. The
study of this material has allowed scientists to discover more about Mars before
    launching [blank_start]space missions[blank_end].
    1. APieces of Mars
    2. BMartian atmosphere
    3. Cspace missions
  7. 7Only [blank_start]16[blank_end] of the 39 Mars missions have been successful.
Beginning with the USSR’s [blank_start]Marsnik 1[blank_end] which was launched in
[blank_start]1960[blank_end], 39 orbiters, landers and rovers have been to Mars but
only [blank_start]16[blank_end] of those missions were a success. In 2016, Europe’s
Exobiology on Mars program will search the planet for signs
of Martian life as well as study the surface and terrain of
the planet and map potential environmental hazards to
    future manned missions to Mars.
    1. A16
    2. BMarsnik 1
    3. C1960
    4. D16
  8. 8The tallest mountain known in the solar system is on Mars.
    [blank_start]Olympus Mons[blank_end] is a [blank_start]21 km[blank_end] high and [blank_start]600 km[blank_end] diameter shield
volcano that was formed billions of years ago. Scientists have
found a lot of recent evidence of volcanic lava which suggests
[blank_start]Olympus Mons[blank_end] may still be active. It is the second highest
mountain in the entire solar system, topped only by the Rheasilvia
central peak on the asteroid Vesta, which is 22 km high.
    1. AOlympus Mons
    2. B21 km
    3. C600 km
    4. DOlympus Mons
  9. 9The landmass of Mars and Earth is very similar. Despite Mars being just [blank_start]15%[blank_end]
the volume and [blank_start]10%[blank_end] the mass of Earth, it actually has a similar landmass
because water covers about [blank_start]70%[blank_end] of Earth’s surface. The surface gravity of Mars
is about [blank_start]37%[blank_end] the gravity found on Earth. This means that on Mars you could in
theory jump 3x higher than you could on Earth.
    1. A15%
    2. B10%
    3. C70%
    4. D37%
  10. 10Mars has seasons like Earth, but they last twice as
long. This is because Mars is tilted on its axis by
about [blank_start]25.19[blank_end] degrees, which is similar to the axial tilt
    of the Earth ([blank_start]22.5[blank_end] degrees).
    1. A22.5
    2. B25.19
