Stimulus-Stimulus versus Stimulus-Response
- Stimulus-Stimulus Model:
- S-S Model of Conditioning
- Neutral stimulus becomes directly associated with the unconditioned stimulus and, because of this association, comes to elicit a response that is related to the unconditioned stimulus.
- Stimulus-Response Model:
- S-R Model of Conditioning
- Neutral stimulus becomes directly associated with the unconditioned response and therefore comes to elicit the same response as the unconditioned response.
-
- Neutral Stimulus + Unconditioned Response =
- Neutral (Conditioned) Stimulus = Unconditioned Response
- The purpose of the unconditioned stimulus is simply to elicit the unconditioned response so that it occurs in close proximity to the neutral stimulus, thereby allowing a connection to be created between the neutral stimulus and the unconditioned response.
-
- Neutral Stimulus + Unconditioned Stimulus = Response that is related to the Unconditioned Stimulus
