  1. Type theory

    • Personality is inherited and can be described using traits e.g. Extroversion, Introversion, Neuroticism, Psychopathy
  2. Eysencks Type Theory

    • As described on the previous slide Eysenck believed in the traits of
    • Neuroticism (stability)
    • Introversion
    • Extroversion
    • Eysencks Type Theory
    • Caption: Eysencks 'wheel'
  3. Eysencks study 1947

    • Aim: Investigate personality differences
    • Method: 700 servicemen completed a questionnaire which was analysed using factor analysis
    • Results: He identified the dimensions seen on the 'wheel' in the previous slide
    • Conclusions: Everyone can be placed on the 2 dimensions of personality.
  4. Evaluation

    • He used a limited sample (age and gender and occupation) BUT further studies have supported it
    • He described a limited amount of personality types
    • He used questionnaires to test personality but results could have been skewed by mood (EV's)
    • He believed that personality is genetic but this does not account for personality changing over time as a result of experience
  5. Study tip

    • If asked to define extroversion, introversion or neuroticism then include an example to support what you say.
    • Make a point, explain it with an example and say why this matters ....P.E.W
  6. Personality Scales

    • EPI: Eysenck Personality Inventory...series of yes/no questions to measure personality e.g. neurotic introvert or stable extrovert
    • EPQ: Eysenck Personality Questionnaire...this can also be used to measure personality based on the 2 dimensions.
    • In 1970 a further dimension of psychoticism was also added; those who score highly are cruel, aggressive, hostile and lacking in feelings.
