Cards in this deck (13)

  1. 1Research Processes: STAGE ONE collecting, analysing and interpreting dataFactors that sociologists look at before choice of topic:
    - their experience
    - their theoretical position ( their view of the world )
    -accessibility and practicality
  2. 2STAGE TWO identifying a research question, hypothesis and aimHypothesis = a specific claim about a 'sociological problem'
Research Question = a specific or general query regarding a sociological problem
A Research Aim = a general goal that the researcher . wants to achieve
  3. 3Positivists and InterperativistsP = start with hypothesis, collect, analyse and interpret data to test the theory - this is deductive
I = start with general aim, collect, analyse and interpret data - this is inductive
  4. 4STAGE THREE carry out a literature review= a study of relevant secondary data, it can be used to test their hypothesis, answer question and achieve aim
  5. 5Positivists and InterpretivistsP = use these to get quantitive data e.g. official stats
I = review secondary data e.g. public documents
  6. 6STAGE FOUR operationalisationThe specific process of defining and measuring complex abstract concepts
  7. 7STAGE 5 sampling- Lack of resources lead to research being taken out on a smaller sample
Sampling = where the researchers select a smaller target group
    - A representative sample is a sample made which has people who are a accurate proportional reflection
  8. 8Positivists and InterpretivistsP = More likely to use probability sampling methods, which tend to be more representative samples because everyone in the group has an equal chance of being picked. Representativeness is more important to positivists because they can make generalisations about the larger target population
  9. 9Positivists and Interpretivists- More likely to use non probability sampling methods. These tend to be less representative samples
    - however they don't like to make generalisations so representativeness is less important
  10. 10STAGE SIX carry out a pilot study= a small scale preliminary study carried out before the research to : check feasibility, improve the design, convince funding organisation, make sure the questions make sense
  11. 11STAGE SEVEN gain accessonce the researcher has chosen a sampling method they need to gain access to the target group
  12. 12Positivists and InterpretivistsP = may be easier to gain access as their research methods remain detached
I = Gaining access may be more difficult as their research methods require them to become more attached to the research participants
