Asiya Elements

Cards in this deck (25)

  1. 1What are Elements?Elements are the most basic materials for building the world around us. They are made of only one type of atom.
  2. 2What use is understanding the Elements?By understanding Elements, scientists can use them to create new materials for building bridges, powering cars, making clothes and curing disease.
  3. 3How many types of atoms are there that make up the world around us?There are only about 100 types of atoms that make up the world around us but these can be arranged in different combinations to create countless types of substances.
  4. 4What is the only microscope atoms can be seen from?Atoms are really tiny, therefore they can only be seen using the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM).What is the only microscope atoms can be seen from?
  5. 5What is the air we breathe in made of?The air we breathe in is made of two elements - oxygen and nitrogen. What is the air we breathe in made of?
  6. 6What are the two classifications of elements.Elements are classified into metallic and non-metallic elements. Some examples of metallic elements are: Aluminium, iron, mercury, gold and silver.
  7. 7What are some of the properties of metallic elements? Some of their properties are that :
    They tend to be shiny
They are solid at room temperature
They are good conductors of heat and electricity
    They are malleable
What are some of the properties of metallic elements?
  8. 8What is the only non-metal that is liquid at room temperature?Bromine is the only non-metal that is liquid at room temperature. What is the only non-metal that is liquid at room temperature?
  9. 9What are some of the properties of non-metals?Non-metals:
    Tend to be dull
Do not conduct heat or electricity
Break or crumble when you bend them.
What are some of the properties of non-metals?
  10. 10How many elements are there? There are 118 known elements but only 92 of them are natural. The rest are synthetic.
  11. 11What helps scientists understand the physical properties of elements? All the known elements are recorded in the periodic table and are listed from heaviest to largest which helps scientists understand their physical properties. What helps scientists understand the physical properties of elements?
  12. 12Where are the chemical symbols for the elements derived from? The chemical symbol for most of the elements are derived from their names apart from a few which derive their symbols from their Latin names.
  13. 13What different ways can the atoms exist in?The atoms can exist :
    As single atoms
    In clusters
    In large grid like structures
What different ways can the atoms exist in?
  14. 14What are physical properties?Physical properties determine whether the element is liquid, solid or gas, its melting and boiling points, how well it conducts heat or electricity and if it can bend or whether it breaks when a force is applied.
  15. 15What are monatomic elements?Monatomic elements are elements that consist of a single atom. These elements are extremely rare with only 6 in the 92 natural occurring elements. What are monatomic elements?
  16. 16Name the 6 monatomic elementsThe 6 monatomic elements are:
    Helium (He)
    Neon (Ne)
    Argon (Ar)
    Krypton (Kr)
    Xenon (Xe)
    Radon (Rn)
  17. 17What are molecules?Molecules are clusters of two or more atoms bonded together. What are molecules?
  18. 18Why is carbon unique among the non metallic elements?Carbon is unique among the non metallic elements because it can form large molecules of almost any size.
  19. 19What are metallic lattices? These are large grid like structures that are able to slide over one another without breaking the lattice.
  20. 20What are non metallic lattices? These are lattices that are bound tightly together and are fixed in position.
  21. 21What makes the diamond the hardest substance on earth? The carbon atoms are bonded strongly to each other in four directions.
  22. 22What are allotropes?Allotropes are different types of the same element.
  23. 23What are the different allotropes of carbon? There are many allotropes of carbon and these include, diamonds, carbon fibre, charcoal, graphite and buckyballs and nanotubes.
  24. 24What is carbon fibre?Carbon fibres are very thin strands of compressed crystals of carbon.
  25. 25Define ductile.Able to be deformed without losing toughness; pliable, not brittle.
