Health and Safety
Cards in this deck (15)
- 1what is a health and safety thing to do with clothing?you should always wear appropriate protective clothing (called Personal Protective Equipment-PPE)
it's the responsibility of your employer (or school) to provide and maintain this equipment - 2what should you do if your working with hazardous materials?wear a face mask or goggles and strong protective gloves
if there are fumes make sure there's enough ventilation
(a spray booth can be used to help remove fumes when using spray glue or paint) - 3what should you do if your working with hot materials?need to wear protective gloves and an apron
for some jobs (like welding metals) you should also wear a face shield - 4what should you wear when making a lot of dust?should wear goggles and a face mask and check ventilation
- 5what should wear when making large metal castings?should wear a thick all-body suit, a face shield, gauntlets (thick gloves) and spats (to protect legs and feet)
- 6what was passed in 1974 to do with health and safety, explain what wanted to dothe health and safety at work act
was passed to make sure employers provide a safe working environment and that they use safety signs to help reduce the risk of accidents - 7what do you have to do when working with tools and machinery?make sure sleeves rolled back
ties tucked in or taken off
apron strings tucked in
long hair tied back
make sure no tripping hazards in workshop
clear up any spillages straight away - 8by law employers and workers must always...? [E.G.]use safe working practises for tools and machinery
E.G. the pillar drill
check safety guards are in place
always secure work safely, like with a clamp
remove chuck keys from chucks before switching on - 9what is a chuck key used for?used to tighten a drill bit holder (a chuck)
you get chucks on various tools - 10what are 5 more health and safety procedure?1.) never leave any machines unattended while switched on
2.) know how to switch off and isolate machines in an emergency
3.) ensure that any dust extraction equipment is working properly
4.) never adjust a machine until you've switched it off and isolated it from the mains first
5.) make sure nobody will distract you or knock you when you're working on the machine - 11what are health and safety precautions with materials? (6)1.) chose your materials sensibly, only use hazardous materials where absolutely necessary
2.) make sure materials are safe to handle, for example debar metal (file down any rough edges) before you start work
3.) be careful when you move long lengths of metal and timber as it's a possible hazard to others
4.) beware of naked flames of red-hot heating elements, and keep them away from flammable liquids - 12what health and safety measure need to be taken when putting away or disposing materials?- make sure you dispose of waste properly so that it doesn't harm the environment
- put materials away sadly so they can't fall or slide and injure anyone - 13what does COSHH stand for, why introduced (when)?Control of Substances Hazardous to Health
the COSHH regulations were introduced in 1988 to protect people from the effects of hazardous substances, materials and processes - 14what is a risk assessment, which allows you to do what?when you identify any potential risks of using chemicals, machinery or equipment
then you put precautions in place to minimise the risk e.g. placing warning signs on machines, or erecting barriers and guards - 15what do you need to think of when writing a risk assessment? (4)1.] what could go wrong?
2.] what effect would this have?
3.] what can i do to prevent it happening
4.] what precautions could i take to make sure the risk is minimised
