Using Alphabets and Scripts flashcards

These decks offer a way to practise recognising characters and connecting them with their readings. Hiragana a-ma pairs hiragana with romanised forms, while Katakana covers katakana characters and their readings. For a different script, Lao alphabet pairs Lao characters with written readings.

If you are starting with Japanese, Hiragana a-ma is a useful first choice because it groups characters from a to ma. Work through a small set, then revisit the cards you find harder to remember. You can use the same approach with whichever script you are studying.

Move from characters to words

Once you are familiar with some hiragana, Body parts in Japanese Hiragana gives you words to recognise alongside their English meanings. Japanese Food - Hiragana offers another set of words to explore.

When you want a different way to check your recall, look for a quiz on the unit page and return to the cards afterwards. Choose a deck that matches the script you want to practise.

Frequently asked questions

Which flashcard deck is a good place to start?

Which scripts do the flashcards cover?

The page includes decks for Japanese hiragana and katakana, as well as Lao, Hebrew, Arabic and Korean alphabets. There is also a Cherokee Syllabary deck. Some decks focus on characters and their readings, while others present Japanese words, including body parts and food.

Are these flashcards free to use?

Yes. Every flashcard resource listed here is free to open and study without an account. The decks were made by GoConqr users. A free account also lets you make your own flashcards, quizzes, mind maps and notes, and save your quiz scores.
