Materials and their properties notes

These notes take different routes through the unit. Resistant Materials introduces metals, including alloys and the distinction between ferrous and non-ferrous metals. AQA DT covers plastics, while Manufactured boards describes boards such as MDF and hardboard.

Choosing a starting point

Start with Resistant Materials if you want an introduction to metal types. For a closer look at one material, Metals includes the properties and uses of mild steel. The notes on wood also cover properties, wood derivatives and woodworking joints.

Revising with notes

Read a short section, then cover it and recall the material names and properties. Return to the note to check your wording. If you want a visual overview, switch to a mind map on the unit page; a quiz can help you check what you remember. Pick a note and work through it at your own pace.

Frequently asked questions

Which note is a useful starting point for metals?

Resistant Materials is a useful starting point because it introduces alloys and distinguishes ferrous from non-ferrous metals. For more detail on an individual material, Metals includes a section on mild steel, with its properties and uses. Both are among the notes listed on this page.

Are these notes free to use?

Yes. Every note listed here is free to open and study without an account. The resources were made by GoConqr users. A free account also lets you make your own notes, quizzes, mind maps and flashcards, and saves your quiz scores.

Which notes cover plastics and other polymers?

AQA DT introduces plastics and types of plastic. AS Level Product Design Revision includes biodegradable polymers, while Polylactic Acid focuses on that particular material. There are also notes on processing plastics, so school students and teachers can choose a topic that fits their revision.
