have expertise or authority on the issue. E.g. 70% people...
- 4Emotional AppealsThese are statements that play on the reader's feelings, rather than their logic.
Such statements often involve threats to values perceived to be held by the reader
- like freedom, human rights, justice, fairness etc. E.g. Let's be fair, we all deserve a second chance - an appeal to a sense of
justice, the idea that we all have the right to be treated fairly.
- 5Emotive LanguageThis is the deliberate use of strong words, which play on the reader's feelings.
Examples: vicious, marvelous, disgusting, massive
- 6Rhetorical questionsThese are questions that require no answer and are used simply for effect. E.g. Everyone likes stars, right?
- 7Exaggeration/HyperboleThis is the use of colourful, forceful language, exaggerating the facts to make them
seem larger or smaller than they really are. E.g. Gigantic - instead of big
- 8SarcasmThe use of a cutting comment, often disguised as being humorous. E.g. Wow, I totally believe you.
- 9Attacks on the oppositionThese are insulting, dismissive, belittling comments about a person or group.
- 10AnalogyThis is the depiction of one event or person to represent another.
- 11Inclusive languageThis is the use of words such as 'we' and 'our' in a friendly tone. E.g. We all love this idea, so let's make it happen!
- 12StatisticsThese are the use of numbers and percentages. E.g. 99% people actually like the idea of...
- 13ToneThe type of 'voice' used. The types of words or phrases used in the writing can
illustrate the tone.
- 14AnecdoteThis is a short personal entertaining story. E.g. Once upon a time...
