- 1Electron Shells (1)They are arranged in shells around the nucleus. The first shell that is closest to the nucleus is the lowest energy level. The further away the shell is from the nucleus, the higher the energy level.
- 2Electron Shells (2)The first shell can hold 2 electrons
The second shell can hold 8 electrons.
The third shell can hold 18 electrons. But it can be filled up to 8 so it spreads to the fourth shell. - 3Patterns in the Periodic TableThe period number tells how many shells there are.
All elements in a group have the same number of electrons in their shells. The outer shell electrons are also called valency electrons. - 4Group VIII (8)The elements of group VIII have a very stable arrangement of electrons. They all have 8 outer shell electrons (except for helium which has 2). This means that group VII elements do not react.
