  1. 1What is the significance of meiosis? What are haploids and diploids?-The significance is to make 1 cell into 4 genetically different cells.
This allfuows for genetically unique offspring.
-Haploids are cells where chromosomes are not in pairs, diploids are cells with paired chromosomes
  2. 2(on paper) How do you calculate mitotic index from a micrograph? Which phase does it have to be in?-(total number of cells in mitosis/total number of cells) x100
-it can be in any phase of mitosis
  3. 3(on paper) Describe the technique for mitotic index?-You have to distinguish the cells and group them by phase and tally them up for the total number of mitotic cells, then divide by the total number of cells and multiply by 100
  4. 4Describe the practical for a root tip squash.1. Cut 0.5cm of root tip and place in a watch glass
    2. Add 2 drops of HCL and 2 drops acetic acid stain to the root tip
    3. Gently heat up the mixture, allowing the stain to penetrate the root but do not let it dry up
    4. Transfer the root tip to a new glass and add 1 drops of acetic acid stain ans cover it with a cover slip and blot dry and apply pressure to thin out the root tip
-If done successfully you should be able to see the different phases of mitosis
