Tara Matthews English Leaving Certificate Inglés 7 fichas

Fichas del conjunto (7)

  1. 1Iago "I follow him but to serve my turn upon him"- Deeply cynical character
    - No principles or loyalties - entirely driven by self-interest
    - Values intellect above emotion
    - Views love as nothing more than "a lust of the blood and a permission of the will"
  2. 2Iago A jealous character- Envious & resentful of anyone who is in anyway superior to him
    - Envies Cassio who was promoted ahead of him
    - Jealous of Othello's "constant, loving nature"
    - Sexual jealousy: suspects Othello & Cassio have slept with Emilia
  3. 3Iago An evil genius- Impressive array of villainous talents
    - Effortlessly manipulates everyone
    - Manipulative ability is showcased in the temptation scene when, with nothing more than insinuations & extremely flimsy 'evidence', he transforms Othello from a contented husband to a jealous monster
  4. 4Iago Turns every situation to his own advantage- Uses Cassio's visible discomfort at approaching Desdemona to plant the seed of doubt in Othello's mind as to his lieutenant's intentions "I cannot think it that he would steal away so guilty-like"
  5. 5Iago "Honest Iago"- Ability of disguising his true self
    - "I am not what I am"
    - Described as honest & good by Othello and Cassio
    - Called honest 4 times throughout the play
  6. 6Iago "I follow him but to serve my turn upon him"- Disloyal
    - Pretends to help every character (Othello, Cassio, Rodgerio, Desdemona)
    - Every character is manipulated & hurt by Iago's schemes but all the time he's pretending to help them
  7. 7Iago "I never found a man who knew how to love himself"- Selfish
    - Believes that free will gives us the power to decide how we behave
    - Puts himself first at all times & mocks those who behave otherwise
