  1. 1Composites-two or more materials combined by bonding. Often improved mechanical, functional and aesthetic properties when compared to original material. Excellent strength-to-weight ratios.Glass-reinforced plastics-thermosetting plastic resin, reinforced with very fine glass. Either matting or strips. Resin strong compressive strength, weak tensile strength. strong as steel. construction depends on thermosetting plastic produced.
  2. 2Glass reinforced plastic-good strength to weight ratio, very resistant to corrosion. Resin on own brittle and can shatter. Alternative to steel in car bodies but unsatisfactory in accidents. Boat building but prone to osmosis. Water into hull and delaminates.Manufacturing GRP-mould produced, release agent sprayed on mould, gel coat applied, thin layer that form outer skin of final product, shiny, coloured, pigment added. Alt. layers of resin+catalyst and glass matting placed in mould, Important resin worked well into matting. Canoe six layers of glass matting impregnated with resin work left over night, gently eased out of mould.
  3. 3Carbon fibre-produced similarly to GRP. Carbon fibres able to take tensile loads. Carbon fibre constructions stronger than GRP, ideal for high-performance structural applications, aircraft. Excellent properties, some instances can replace trad. mats.MDF-common, made from waste wood or softwoods esp. grown, chips subjected to heat+pressure, pulps wood, mixed with synthetic resin, bond fibres of pulp together, heated and under pressure to a sheet, uniform thickness and texture. Cooled and trimmed. Laminated, cut and machined, dust produced, great care taken, dust extraction, damage to skin, throat and nasal passages. Furniture varnished with high quality wood or Formica. MDF can be heavy.
  4. 4Chipboard-Another common composite material, wood particles glued together, under heat and pressure, rigid board, relatively smooth surface. Normal( soft), med. high (hard) density forms. Only suitable for indoors, when wet, waterlogged, swells and breaks down.Laminates-bonding two or more layers of material together. Very stable. Not warp or misshape, sometimes easier to work than solid wood. Sheet form, easy to mark out, cut and shape. Cheaper not aesthetic as wood. Often need veneer or paint. Knock-down fittings needed in furniture.
  5. 5Plywood-layers of veneers bonded together with glue. Veneers are thin sheets of wood abut 1mm thick, obtained from rotary cut timber. Bonded with each grain at 90 degrees to sheet above and blow. Odd number of layers. Stable. Delaminate, layers come apart if wet. Flooring, decorative veneer added flat pack.Blockboard-strips of softwood, 25mm wide and positioned edge-to-edge. Sheet produced covered with veneer, usually beech, glued together under high pressure. Glues usually waterbased, thus indoors. Good resistance to warping. If cut, edges can be a problem as they will always match hardwood veneer of upper and lower. It can be necessary therefore t finish off unsightly edges with veneer strips.
