- 1What did Rutherford study? The effects of radioactivity on matter. He studied 3 forms of radiation: Alpha/Positively charged, Beta/Negatively charged and Gamma/Neutrally charged
- 2What was Rutherford's hypothesis? His hypothesis was that the nucleus is made up of positively charged particles (protons) and since the atom is electrically neutral, there is an equal amount of electrons surrounding the nucleus to eliminate the charge.
- 3What did the Rutherford-Bohr Atomic Model include?-Electrons occupy different orbits around the atom
- Light: when electrons receive energy (heat), it becomes 'excited' and can jump to an orbit farther from the nucleus. Then it returns to its original orbit, releasing energy in the form of light. - 4What was discovered after the Rutherford-Bohr model and by who?Neutrons by James Chadwick
- 5What are the characteristics of the METALS (group of elements)?-Conducts heat & electricity
- Ductile and Malleable
-Shiny
-Solid at room temperature
-Usually reacts with acid - 6Which group of elements do I belong to?: -Poor conductors of electricity & heat -Many are gases at room temperature -Reduces to powderNon-metals
- 7What are the characteristics of METALLOIDS?-Consists of: Boron (B), Silicon (Si), Germanium (Ge), Arsenic (As), Antimony (Sb), Tellurium (Te) & Astatine (At)
-Shares properties of metals & non-metals
-Used to make semi-conductors - 8What am I?: -First column of periodic table -Highly reactive-must be stored in oil -Only found as compoundAlkali Metals
- 9What am I? What are my characteristics? -2nd column of periodic tableAlkaline earth metals:
-Highly malleable and reactive (burns easily in presence of heat)
- Found as compound - 10What am I? What are my characteristics?: -7th column of periodic tableHallogens:
-Non-metals
-Easily forms compounds
-Powerful disinfectants - 11What am I? What are my characteristics? -8th column of periodic tableNoble Gases:
-Very stable (rarely react with other elements)
-Found in their elemental state - 12What do the rows on the periodic table represent? The period - number of shells
- 13What is the periodicity of properties? The repetition of patterns in properties from one period to another.
Ex/ Melting & boiling point, atomic radius, etc. - 14Identify each part:-6= Atomic Number ->Number of protons/electrons
-C= Element Symbol
-12.0107= Atomic Mass Unit-> average mass of one atom of an element
-Carbon= Element Name
- 15How is the number of neutrons calculated?Atomic mass unit-Atomic number= neutrons
- 16What type of representation is this? What is represented?Lewis Dot Notation:
The element symbol & valence electrons (found from group number)
- 17What type of representation is this? What is represented? The Rutherford-Bohr Model:
-The period (number of shells)
-The group(number of valence electrons)
-Atomic Number (number of electrons and protons)
- 18What type of representation is this? What is represented?Simplified Atomic Notation:
-Number of shells
-Number of electrons in each shell
-Number of protons & neutrons (in circle)
- 19What type of representation is this? What is represented?Ball and Stick Atomic Model

- 20What is an isotope? An isotope is an atom of an element with the same number of protons as another atom in the same element but with a different number of neutrons
- 21Why do noble gases tend not to form bonds with other atoms?Their outermost shell is full
- 22What is a mole?A mole (n)=mass(m) / molar mass (MM)
