Nitrogen Cycle

Fichas del conjunto (7)
- 1NitrogenNitrogen is an important element in ecosystems. It makes up almost 80% of the earth’s air and is required by organisms to make amino acids and proteins. Atmospheric nitrogen cannot be used by living things so it must be converted into usable forms. The nitrogen cycle is the movement of nitrogen through the food chain from simple inorganic compounds (not made from living things) into complex organic compounds (made from living things).

- 3Nitrogen FixationThe process by which atmospheric nitrogen (N2) is converted into ammonia (NH3). a. Atmospheric nitrogen is converted into nitrates that are introduced into the soil through precipitation. b. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria found in the soil and on root nodules of plants can also convert nitrogen gas in the soil into ammonia.
- 4NitrificationBacteria convert ammonia (NH3) into usable nitrates (NO3 − ).
- 5AmmonificationWhen animals excrete waste or die, the materials are broken down by decomposers and the nitrogen is returned to the soil in the form of ammonia.
- 6AssimilationPlants absorb nitrates from the soil through roots and convert them into plant proteins. Animals eat plants and build animal proteins.
- 7DenitrificationWhen organisms die, raw nutrients are released from the dead organisms and enter the soil. Denitrifying bacteria break down nitrates in the soil into N2 and send it into the air. This process removes nitrates from the soil making it infertile and less suitable for plant use. Once nitrogen gets back into the air, the cycle starts all over again.
