- 1What are fixed beams?1. Beams which are fixed at both ends.
2. They are generally used in trusses.
3. They have only shear stress; no moment is generated in the beam.
4. There is no vertical movement or rotation in the beam. - 2Differentiate between statically determinate and statically indeterminate beams.1. Statically determinate beams are those in which support reactions can be determined by basic equilibrium conditions. Beams in which reactions cannot be determined by basic equilibrium conditions are statically indeterminate beams.
2. Basic equilibrium conditions used are summation of horizontal force/vertical force/moment= 0. For indeterminate beams, basic equilibrium conditions are used with the combination of other conditions like moment area method, strain energy method, etc.
3. Examples of determinate beams are simply supported beam, cantilever beam. Examples of indeterminate beams are fixed beam, continuous beam - 3What are the advantages of fixed beam?1. It is stiffer, stronger, and more stable.
2. The fixing moments at the supports reduces the magnitude of the max bending moment within or near the centre of the span.
