Atoms and Elements

Fichas del conjunto (9)
- 1AtomsIn one human cell there is over 100000000000000 atoms
- 2Atoms structureEach Atom is made up of multiple smaller Particles. They consist of a nucleus and electrons, the electrons orbit around the nucleus in rings (Shells). The nucleus is made up of protons and neutrons.

- 3Mass and ChargeProtons and neutrons both have a relative mass of 1. Where as electrons have a mass that is 2000 times smaller.
protons have a positive charge = +1
neutrons have a neutral charge = 0
electrons have a negative charge = -1 - 4Size of a AtomAtoms have a radius of around 0.1 nm
The nucleus's radius is 10000x smaller than the hole atom
electrons as too small to see - 5Loss or Gain of ElectronsIf the number of protons and electrons are the same then the atom is neutral
If there are more electrons than protons then it is a negative ion, and if the atom has more protons than electrons then it is a positive ion. - 6period table

- 7nuclear symbolsThe First thing is the element symbol which shows us what element we are looking at. We are looking at an O which stands for Oxygen
The second thing is in the bottom left corner there is a number this tell you how many protons there are
Finally in the top left corner there is the total mass number which is the protons and neutrons added up.
- 8ElementsThe number of protons tells us which element it is. you can quickly find the mount of protons by looking at the atomic number.
there are around 100 elements - 9IsotopesIsotopes are different forms of the same element, that have the same number of protons, but a different number of neutrons.
