- 12 Major Types of Articulations1) Fibrous - no synovial cavity, bones connected by dense fibrous connective tissue
2) Cartilaginous - no synovial cavity, bones cnonected by cartilage - 2Fibrous ArticulationsSutures/synostoses
Syndesmoses
Gomphosis - 3Cartilaginous ArticulationsSynchondrosis
Symphyses - 4Define Sutures/synostosesBones interlock by a series of projections, like puzzle pieces. Short fibers continuous with periosteum connect bones; ossifies in adulthood. No movement allowed
- 5SyndesmosesConnected by a ligament. Slight movement allowed (amphiarthrotic). Distal tibiofibular junction and radioulnar connection.
- 6GomphosesTied by a ligament, in a bony socket. No movement allowed (synarthrotic). Teeth only.
- 7SynchodrosesConnected by cartilage but no movement allowed (synarthrotic)- 1st rib with manubrium of sternum; epiphysial plates in growing children
- 8Symphysesseparated by a pad of fibrocartilage covered with hyaline cartilage. Allow limited movement (amphiarthrotic). Pubic symphysis, intervertebral articulations
- 9Epimysiumdense irregular connective sheath surrounding perimysium and fascicles; covers entire muscle
- 10Perimysiumfibrous connective tissue that covers each fascicle and is found between fascicles. Larger blood vessels & nerves run through.
