  1. 1What are the 3 most common types of decision making?Neutralistic (NDM)
    Recognition Primed (RPD)
    Analytical/Structured (ADM)
  2. 2What is NDM?Relies on past experience
    Heuristics
    Very common with experienced pilots
  3. 3What is Heuristics?Mental shortcuts that ease the cognitive load of making a decision.
Rules of thumb, common sense, best practices, intuitive judgements
  4. 4What is RPD?CUES --> recognise patterns --> choose a single course of action that will achieve the outcome.
based on knowledge and creating mental models of the outcome (mental rehearsing)
  5. 5What is rule based DM?decision is based on procedures:
    used more so by novices
If this happens do this... then do this... (Emergency situations from a handbook)
  6. 6What decision making causes the least and most stress?RPD = less stress
    Creative DM = Most stress
  7. 7When decisions become stressful there are several things that occur which can have a negative effect, name 7Situation awareness
    attention narrowing
    perceptual field decreased
    vigilance decreased
    satisficing
    rigidity
    working memory capacity decreased
  8. 8What is satisficing?Satisficing is a decision making phenomena which relieves the anxiety of hard decisions.
It can be described as ‘settling for a decision which may not be optimal, but is acceptable’.
It is a decision-making strategy that aims for a satisfactory or adequate result, rather than the optimal solution.
  9. 9What is perseveration/rigidity?• The higher and longer the level of commitment to achieve a goal the harder it is to change the decision, even if it is not relevant anymore.
  10. 10What is a plan continuation bias?Having made a decision on a course of action, it can be quite difficult to subsequently overturn that decision and take another course of action.
The initial decision actually relieves some stress, and to have to reconsider another decision can mean revisiting this stressful state.
There is therefore an inherent bias to continue with the original course of action, even though it may be apparent that it is no longer the best one.
  11. 11What are some benefits of experience in DM?tend to collect relevant information more quickly and more effectively
    - know who to communicate with and do so effectively
    - often recognise situations more quickly and react effectively
    - often have a range of solutions on hand to deal with a large range of situations
    - once a situation is understood, find the course of action is usually obvious
    - often have a better understanding of situations and are therefore less stressed
    - are able to fit a procedure to a situation, whereas less experienced people tend to stick to SOP’s or written procedures.
  12. 12Structured DM model: G R A D E ?gather data
    Review info
    Alternatives - consider
decide on a course of action
    evaluate the outcome
  13. 13What are the 3 reason DM can go wrong?Faulty: situation assessment, selection of action and risk assessment
