About Critical and Creative Thinking, Problem Solving

GoConqr Original

What the page covers

The unit brings together two strands of thinking: judging ideas carefully and producing new ones. Most of the material is in mind map form, with a smaller set of quizzes, flashcard decks, notes, slides and flowcharts.

  • Critical thinking: several maps called Critical Thinking define it as the disciplined process of analysing and evaluating information. UNIVERSAL INTELLECTUAL STANDARDS covers the standards used to check the quality of reasoning.
  • Asking questions: Asking The Right Questions Ch.1 looks at forming an argument and setting interrelated questions, while The Benifit and Manner of Asking Questions follows on from it.
  • Creativity and problem solving: Creativity and innovation for problem solving looks at problems versus opportunities, mental models and the concept fan. Lateral thinking, The Six Thinking Hats and scamper offer other ways in.

Where to start

Begin with one of the Critical Thinking maps to get a working definition. Then move to Asking The Right Questions Ch.1, which turns that definition into habits you can use on any text or argument. If you are more interested in ideas than analysis, go straight to Creativity and innovation for problem solving.

Using maps and quizzes together

Read a map first and note the branches you could not explain without looking. Then try a quiz. The Reasoning Topics map lists analogy, classification, coding-decoding, blood relations, syllogism and data sufficiency, and the Alpha numeric series quiz gives you letter-pattern practice on the same theme. Brainstorming is a short quiz for the creative side. Flashcard decks such as E-GMAT CR FLASHCARDS suit anyone preparing for the GMAT.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Thinking and Academic Writing strand of Personal and career development. That makes it a natural companion to essay planning, reading critically and decision making, and the Decision making flowchart is one example.

Next step

Choose one map today, work through it, and then make a few flashcards of your own from the branches you found hardest.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with one of the Critical Thinking mind maps, which set out a definition and the main ideas. Then try Asking The Right Questions Ch.1 to see how critical questions are used. If you prefer idea generation, open Creativity and innovation for problem solving first.

What do the mind maps cover?

The maps cover critical thinking, asking good questions, the universal intellectual standards, the ladder of inference, lateral thinking, the Six Thinking Hats, design thinking and creative problem solving. Some also cover reasoning topics such as syllogism and data sufficiency. Over 140 maps are listed.

Are there quizzes for practice?

Yes. The page has more than 4 quizzes. Alpha numeric series and REASONING ALPHABET SERIES give letter and number pattern practice, and Brainstorming covers the creative side. Use them after reading a map to see which ideas you can already recall.

Is anything here useful for exam preparation?

One flashcard deck, E-GMAT CR FLASHCARDS, is aimed at GMAT critical reasoning. The reasoning maps and alphabet series quizzes also give practice in logic puzzles. The rest of the page is general study material for thinking, questioning and idea development.

Are the resources free, and who made them?

Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users, not by GoConqr itself. A free account lets you save quiz scores and create your own quizzes, maps, flashcards and notes.

What if I cannot find the topic I need?

Try a nearby resource first, as many maps overlap. Lateral thinking, Types of Thinking and Problem Solving cover related ground. If a gap remains, you can build your own map or flashcards from your course notes.
