- 1By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes. This is said by the second witch, after they have cast their spell (Double, double toil and trouble). She is referring to Macbeth, who by this point, she perceives as wicked.
- 2Out damned spot, out I say. This is Lady Macbeth. It shows us that she is hallucinating, and that she is experiencing guilt, as she is still seeing literal blood on her hands, which symbolises the part she played in the King's murder.
- 3So fair and foul a day I have not seen.Spoken by Macbeth, this echoes the witches from the play's opening scene (fair is foul and foul is fair). This is a seeming paradox (contradicts itself) but relates to the ways that things are not as they seem.
