Guided Reading

1. Is an instructional setting that enables you to work with a small group of students to help them learn effective strategies for processing text with understanding

   • What does it mean to "read" a text?
     • Identify and understand the important information
     • Connect personally with such things as setting, characters, and plot
     • React to the text emotionally (humour, loneliness, hope, terror, grief)
     • Derive the author's precise meaning even when it is subtle or ironic
     • Reproduce the author's intended syntax and phrasing when read aloud
     • Integrate the meaning of the text into one's life
     • Make inferences beyond the test

2. Purpose - to meet the different instructional needs of all students and to enable them to expand their reading powers
