1. Strip

   • Disadvantages
     • Might take longer
     • Might need trench support
     • Can be hazardous as the soil can get loosened
   • Advantages
     • Cheap
     • Involves doing brick and blockword in trenches
     • Traditional method understood by site staff

2. Pad foundations

   • Advantages
     • Provides foundation for heavy loads
     • Quick to construct
   • Disadvantages
     • Needs framework
     • Can move if loads are not balanced around it

3. Short bored piles

   • Advantages
     • Quick to construct
     • Provides foundations when the soil is weak
   • Disadvantages
     • Construction causes lots of noise
     • Expensive

4. Deep strip of mass fill

   • Advantages
     • No brick or blockwork needed in trenches
     • Faster methods of construction
   • Disadvantages
     • Could be expensive

5. Raft foundation

   • Advantages
     • Provides good foundation where soil is variable
     • Can be used as a floor
     • Can be used to fit in sevices
   • Disadvantages
     • Expensive to construct
     • Can crack if not constructed correctly
     • Needs formwork
