Secondary Storage

  1. Secondary storage is non volatile it meaning it stores data permanently.

  2. Optical

    • Optical storage has a lower capacity compared to magnetic storage. Therefore it is less storage and can store less files and programs.
    • Optical storage has more portability compared to magnetic storage. Therefore it can be played on many other devices.
    • Optical storage
    • Optical storage is not very durable compared to Solid State storage due to moving parts. This means that if it is dropped it is easily damged.
  3. Solid State

    • Solid state is more durable than optical and magnetic storage as it has no moving parts. Therefore it is harder to damage.
    • Solid State storage is less cost effective than magnetic and optical storage, meaning it is not very good value for money if you are not looking for a faster read and write speed.
    • Solid State storage has a faster read/write speed compared to Magnetic storage, making it more time efficient. Therefore, it works a lot faster than any other storage enabling more opportunities.
    • Solid State storage has a lower capacity than magnetic storage meaning it stores less files. This means that if you are looking to store loads of files and programs Solid State is not very good.
  4. Magnetic

    • Magnetic storage has a higher capacity than solid state because it can hold more data. Therefore it is more cost effective.
    • Magnetic storage is more cost effective than solid state. Therefore it is worth the money on it.
    • Magnetic storage is less durable than solid state because it is easily broken. This means that if it is broken all data will be lost on the device which is not very convenient.
    • Magnetic storage does not have a fast read and write speed compared to Solid State storage making it slower therefore it is harder to workl in smaller amounts of time,
  5. Keywords

    • Durability - How robust/hard wearing the storage device is.
    • Capacity - The amount of data a component can hold (measures in bytes)
    • Portability - How easy the storage device can be used on other devices
    • Data transfer speed (read/write speed) - How fast a component can read or write data to another component (such as the RAM and hard drive)
      • Read - Access/load the data from a component. Write - Adding/saving the data to a component.
