SB1 - Mind Map summary

  1. SB1a - MICROSCOPES

    • Recall what an electron microscope is
      • The electron microscope is a type of microscope that uses electrons to create an image of the target.
    • Recall what is meant by an instrument’s resolution.
      • The fineness of detail that can be seen in an image - the higher the resolution of an image, the more detail it holds. In computing terms, resolution is measured in dots per inch.
    • Explain why some cell structures can be seen with an electron microscope but not with a light microscope.
      • Electron microscopes have a higher magnification. This means that they can see smaller (sub)cellular structures, that light microscopes (with lower magnifications) can't see.
    • Calculate total magnification using a formula.
      • Magnification = Image size / actual image size
    • Interpret the SI prefixes milli-, micro-, nano- and pico-
      • milli (10^−3) 0.001 micro (10^−6) 0.000001 nano (10^−9) 0.000000001 pico (10^−12) 0.000000000001
  2. SB1b - PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS

    • Identify the parts of plant and animal cells
      • ANIMAL CELL Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosome  PLANT CELL (animal cell parts), chloroplast, vacuole, cell wall
    • Recall the parts of plant and animal cells.
      • ANIMAL CELL Nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria, ribosome  PLANT CELL (animal cell parts), chloroplast, vacuole, cell wall
    • Make drawings of plant and animal cells using a light microscope and identify their parts.
    • Describe the functions of the sub-cellular structures commonly found in eukaryotic cells
      • CHLOROPLAST - contains chlorophyll for photosynthesis. Contains the enzymes needed for photosynthesis. CELL WALL - provide structure and protection. Made from cellulose.  PERMANENT VACUOLE - Filled with cell sap to help keep the cell swollen.CYTOPLASM - contains dissolved nutrients and salts. It is where many of the chemical reactions happen. NUCLEUS- Contains genetic material, including DNA. CELL MEMBRANE - semi-permeable & controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell. MITOCHONDRIA - Organelles that contains the enzymes for respiration, and where most energy is released in respiration. RIBOSOME - Tiny structures where protein synthesis occurs
    • Estimate sizes using microscope fields of view.
      • use formula: Actual size = Image size / magnification
    • Estimate sizes using scale bars.
  3. SB1c - SPECIALISED CELLS

    • Describe how sperm cells are adapted to their function.
    • Describe how egg cells are adapted to their function.
    • Describe how ciliated epithelial cells are adapted to their function.
    • Draw conclusions about a cell’s function from its adaptations.
  4. SB1d - INSIDE BACTERIA

  5. SB1e - ENZYMES AND NUTRITION

  6. SB1f - TESTING FOODS

  7. SB1g - ENZYME ACTION

  8. SB1h - ENZYME ACTIVITY

  9. SB1i - TRANSPORTING SUBSTANCES
