   • These are produced by organisations such as government departments, schools, welfare agencies, businesses and charities.

   • These include items such as letters, diaries, photo albums and autobiographies.

   • This is simply a personal or public document that was created in the past.

   • Put forward 4 criteria that he focusses on when assessing documents: authenticity, credibility, representativeness and meanings.

   • School girl letters. Study to see the formation and thoughts of girl friendships. She used notes passed to one another in class and diaries.

   • Thomas and Znaniecki
     • Studied migration and social change by using a variety of documents. These including 764 letters, autobiographies, newspaper articles, court and social work records.
